New Delhi: India is noticing a rise in bone problems across all age groups, everyone be it men or women is suffering from some kind of bone problem. According to a Bone Health Survey, 90 per cent of Indian women battle body aches in a year, while a substantial 71 per cent of the respondents revealed that they suffered back aches. But how to understand what is causing the problem?
Dr Vaibhav Bagaria, Director, Orthopaedics, Sir HN Reliance Hospital, Mumbai shared with News9, “In India, bone health issues are increasingly common across all age groups, resembling an epidemic that warrants serious attention. Understanding the root causes and finding potential solutions is crucial.”

Nutritional Deficiencies
Calcium Deficiency: Calcium is vital for maintaining strong bones. Insufficient calcium intake can lead to weakened bones and a higher risk of fractures.
Vitamin D Deficiency: Vitamin D is essential for the proper absorption of calcium. A lack of vitamin D can result in inadequate bone mineralisation, leading to conditions such as rickets and osteomalacia.
Poor Diet: Diets lacking in nutrients crucial for bone health—such as magnesium, vitamin K, and protein—can negatively impact bone strength.
Lifestyle Factors
Sedentary Lifestyle: Inactivity, particularly a lack of weight-bearing exercises, can lead to weaker bones.Excessive
Alcohol Consumption: High alcohol intake can disrupt calcium balance and interfere with bone-forming cell production.
Smoking: Smoking reduces bone density and increases fracture risk.
Medical Conditions and Medications
Chronic Diseases: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, and inflammatory bowel disease can impair bone health.
Endocrine Disorders: Disorders such as hyperthyroidism and hyperparathyroidism can accelerate bone loss.
