Chess Olympiad 2024: Indian men earn stellar win vs Azerbaijan, women edge Kazakhstan

New Delhi: India continued their strong run at the Chess Olympiad 2024 as both the men’s and the women’s teams secured wins in Round 5 of the tournament on Sunday, September 15. The men’s team continued their winning streak with a dominant victory against Azerbaijan while the women’s team managed to edge Kazakhstan in a thriller.

The second-seeded Indian men’s team were up against a tricky opponent in Azerbaijan but they kept their unbeaten run intact with Arjun Erigaisi and D Gukesh both contributing to a comprehensive 3-1 victory. The women’s team struggled a bit but managed to hold their nerves to beat Kazakhstan 2.5-1.5.

Gukesh, Erigaisi star in India men’s team’s victory

Grand Master Gukesh and Grand Master Erigaisi were on top of their game once again in the Indian men’s team’s 5th-round clash against Azerbaijan. Gukesh defeated GM Aydin Suleymani on the top board. However, R Praggnanandhaa had to settle for a draw against Nijat Abasov after an intense battle.

Erigaisi helped the men’s team seal the victory after beating world no.4 Rauf Mamedov on the 3rd board. The top-seeded Indian secured his fifth win in a row in the tournament. Vidit Gujrathi played out a draw against the experienced Shakhriyar Mamedyarov on the 4th board to help India secure a 3-1 win.

Indian women’s team come from behind to beat Kazakhstan

Led by R Vaishali, the Indian women’s team pulled off a come-from-behind 2.5-1.5 win against Kazakhstan in Round 5 of the Chess Olympiad 2024 on Sunday. The Indian women’s team went behind after Dronavalli Harika suffered a shock defeat against Bibisara Assaubayeva on the top board. However, others managed to help India recover from the early setback.

R Vaishali brought India back into the contest by beating Meruert Kamalidenova on the second board before the reigning world Junior Girls’ champion Divya Deshmukh played out a draw against Xeniya Balabayeva. Vantika Agrawal beat Alua Nurman on the 4th board to help the Indian women’s team end the day with a crucial victory.
