New Delhi: Australia were eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2024 on Tuesday after Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh to become the second team to qualify for the semi-finals from Group 1. Australia were knocked out of the tournament after suffering back-to-back defeats against India and Afghanistan in the Super Eight.
Mitchell Marsh & Co. suffered a shock defeat against Afghanistan in their second game in the Super Eight which hurt their chances of qualifying for the semis. They were still in the race though heading into their final Super 8 clash against India in St Lucia on Monday. However, India produced a stellar all-round performance to outclass the Aussies and send them packing.
Australia headed into the Super Eight after enjoying an unbeaten run in the group stage and were arguably the favourites to make it to the knockout stage from Group 1 comprising of India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and them. However, Australia managed a solitary win against Bangladesh in the Super Eigh to bow out of the tournament after a dismal campaign.
Australia were brutally trolled online after Afghanistan’s win over Bangladesh on Tuesday confirmed their elimination from the tournament. Skipper Marsh was mocked for his statement ahead of the India clash. The Aussie skipper had boasted there was no better team to be in a must-win situation for them than India. However, he and his teams both failed to live up to his words.

Who will India and Afghanistan face in the semis?
India and Afghanistan have both qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024 from Group 1. India will take on defending champions England in the second semi-final on Thursday while Afghanistan will lock horns with South Africa in the 1st semi-final on the same day. Both teams are up against difficult opponents and will have to be on top of their game to make it to the final.
