New Delhi: Darwin Nunez and Colombian fans had an altercation after the semi-final fixture between Uruguay and Colombia. The latter beat Marcelo Bielsa’s team 0-1 to reach the final of the Copa America 2024. The altercation broke the internet, with the Liverpool star caught punching and cussing a certain group of Colombian fans. He went up the stand along with a few teammates and an ugly quarrel started to take place. The Uruguayan was seen fighting with the group of supporters, making fans curious about what went into the incident.
CONMEBOL announced that they have started investigating the fiasco between the Uruguayan players and the Colombian fans. Initially, fans and the world had criticised the players for their unprofessionalism, but Uruguayan defender, Jose Maria Gimenez, openly talked about the danger faced by their families on the stand as the opponent supporters had been threatening the families. He said, “Let me say something before they cut you off because they won’t let us speak into the microphone, they don’t want me to say anything about what’s going on but this is a disaster,”. the implication of the organisers ‘cutting’ off their mics raises serious questions on the management of CONMEBOL.
The defender further said: “Please be careful, our families are in the stands, there are newborn babies. It was a disaster; there was no police and we had to defend our families. This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don’t know how to drink.”
CONMEBOL released a statement condemning the violence after the match after the post-match interview. They stated: “Our work is based on the conviction that soccer connects and unites us through positive values. There is no place for intolerance and violence on or off the field.”

Per reports, Darwin Nunez got involved in the altercation due to the Colombian fans intimidating his wife and son in the stands. The striker went up the railings to confront the set of fans and got involved in the brawl due to their continuous insults and cusses.
The governing body of the CONMEBOL is expected to investigate it publicly due to the negative exposure it attained around the world. If the fans are found guilty, they will face serious charges in the South American court of law. Meanwhile, if found that Darwin Nunez and Jose Gimenez were the ones to trigger the brawl, they will face a minimum of year-long bans from playing football internationally.
