Delhi Capitals rope in Munaf Patel as bowling coach for IPL 2025

New Delhi: IPL franchise Delhi Capitals on Tuesday announced India’s World Cup-winning player Munaf Patel as their new bowling coach for the next season. The 41-year-old former cricketer will join the Hemang Badani-led coaching staff for IPL 2025 as the franchise aims to build a new coaching set-up with a mindset to turn their fortunes.

The Capitals took to their social media platforms to announce the development. “Old-school grit. Winning mindset.Welcome to DC, legend,” the franchise wrote its caption to welcome the former Indian speedster to their coaching staff.

Munaf played 13 Tests, 70 One-Day Internationals, and three T20 Internationals for the Indian men’s national team from 2006 to 2011. He was part of the MS Dhoni-led India which lifted the 2011 World Cup at home. He finished his career with 121 international wickets across formats with the 86 dismissals in ODIs being the most.

 Munaf Patel’s IPL career

Munaf Patel played 63 IPL matches in the IPL across seven seasons from 2008 to 2017. He picked up 74 wickets at an average of 22.95 and an economy rate of 7.52 with his best bowling figures 5 for 21 recorded in IPL 2011. He played for Rajasthan Royals (2008-2010), Mumbai Indians (2011-2013) and Gujarat Lions (2017).

Munaf won IPL titles with the Royals in the inuagural season, in fact he was part of the playing XI under Shane Warne’s captaincy during the IPL 2008 final against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was also part of Mumbai Indians’ squad when they first lifted the IPL trophy in 2013 under Rohit Sharma.

He finished his IPL playing career featuring for the now-defunct Gujarat Lions in 2017, though he played just a couple of matches in that season.

The Gujarat-based cricket professional will work under newly-appointed head coach Hemang Badani and director of cricket Venugopal Rao.
