New Delhi: Didier Deschamps will be stepping down from his role as the head of the France team at the end of his ongoing contract which ends with the 2026 World Cup cycle as reported by ESPN. Deschamps’s last assignment with the French side will be the World Cup which will take place in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico, which is if Les Bleus qualify for the tournament.

If the French side fails to qualify, Deschamps will leave at the end of the qualification campaign. Zinedine Zidane, the former manager of Real Madrid and the winner of three consecutive Champions League trophies, is being seen as the top contender to replace his former French teammate.

Deschamps took over as the head of the France team from Laurent Blanc back in the summer of 2012. The 56-year-old took the team to another level of success in international football during these last 13 years at the helm of the French team. He led France to the 2018 World Cup win in Russia and won the 2021 Nations League. Aside from this, he had taken the team to the Euros 2016 and World Cup 2022 finals and the Euros 2024 semifinal where they lost to ultimate champions Spain.

Diddier Deschamps’s amazing record with the French team

There is little doubt he will end his tenure as the most successful head coach for France and it will be no easy task to follow Deschamps’s statistics, with a win percentage of 64.2% and making at least semi-final appearances in the last four of the major tournaments. He will end his tenure at 14 years, as one of the longest-serving national coaches of the team.

With his win in the 2018 World Cup, he became only the third person who had won the World Cup both as a manager and as a player, joining Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer. He was part of the team as a player which had won France’s first World Cup in 1998.

France team will find out their group position for qualifying after they finish their Nations League competition which starts with a quarterfinal game against Croatia in March. Under Deschamps, big names like the current French captain Kylian Mbappe also emerged, though the latter has been missing from the squad for the Nations League over the last two international breaks owing to injuries and poor form.

Didier Deschamps has been one of the most successful managers of the France team, having led the side to the World Cup 2022 win and the 2021 Nations League victory.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
