New Delhi: On the first day of the second Test match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at Galle, dramatic turn of events unfolded which became the talking point of the day. Sri Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne was left fuming and vented out his frustration at fellow teammate Dinesh Chandimal after his unfortunate run-out, which happened because of a terrible mix-up.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first in Galle, Karunaratne, who usually maintains his calm on the field, lost his cool in the 39th over of the innings. The Sri Lankan batter, who was looking set on 46 runs, got involved in a mix-up with his batting partner which resulted in his run out. The duo had steered the hosts into a solid position before the unfortunate dismissal happened.
How the unfortunate run-out happened
On the first ball of the over bowled by Mitchell Santner which was pitched on the leg side, Karunaratne flicked towards the mid-wicket area. Glenn Phillips, who was fielding at mid-wicket, made a remarkable diving stop to cut off what appeared to be a single. Karunaratne ran for a run but Chandimal hesitated. The former had almost reached the non-striker’s end and could not come back on time.
As the New Zealand team started to celebrate the dismissal, Karunaratne was frustrated and exchanged a few words with Chandimal in an angry manner before leaving the field. His frustration and anger was vividly visible as it put an end to a 122-run stand.
