Five people were killed and five were injured when two lorries collided at Wadiaram Crossroads on National Highway -44 in Chegunta mandal, Medak district at around 5 am in the early hours of Friday, reports said.
As per police officials, the two lorries – one loaded with fodder coming from Chhattisgarh and another loaded with cattle from Nagpur, were headed in the same direction towards Hyderabad.
Medak Superintendent P Bala Swamy said, “The front tyre of the first lorry blew up and it slowed down and the second lorry coming at a high speed from behind smashed into the first lorry.”
The driver and helper of the first lorry are safe while five from the second lorry died on the spot and three of the injured were moved to Gandhi Hospital and two others are undergoing treatment in another hospital.
“The deceased are yet to be identified and their families will be informed after it is done,” Inspector Balaraju said.
“The second lorry driver was reportedly sleepy and he was the only one driving all the way from Nagpur. As per norms, an additional driver is required for a distance of more than 500 kms. Further investigation is on,” he said.
