New Delhi: UP Warriorz won the thrilling match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the match no.9 of the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 played at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru. This was the very first instance of the match entering into the Super Over phase to determine a result in the WPL history.

The two teams levelled scores at 180 after the stipulated period of 20 overs per innings. While RCB posted 180 for 6 in the first innings, the UP Warriorz were bowled out for 180 on the final ball of the match.

After the two innings couldn’t decide the winner, the match followed the Super Over – a tiebreaker format in cricket – to decide the winner.

Chinelle Henry and Grace Harris walked out to bat for UP Warriorz while pace bowler Kim Garth was handed the ball for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Henry picked a couple of runs on the first two deliveries but the Australian bowler claimed her dismissal on the third ball of the over. A wide followed against Sophie Ecclestone. Garth was very disciplined with her lines as she conceded just two runs from the last three balls as the Warriorz posted 8 runs from the over.

Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh turned up to chase the seemingly low score. However, Ecclestone was too good for the duo to defend the total. The England left-arm spinner started with a dot ball, bowling on the back of the length. A single was unfollowed on the second ball.

Though Mandhana turned down the appeal for leg-before-wicket against Ecclestone, just three singles were followed, including on the final ball when the RCB skipper was needed to smash six to seal the match. But it was the brilliance of the England all-rounder, whose efforts pushed the match to this stage.

Earlier in the match, Ecclestone smashed two sixes and a boundary off Renuka Singh Thakur’s bowling when the UP outfit were in need of 18 runs from the final over. Ecclestone was run out on the final ball when all the team was in search for was a single.

Ecclestone made 33 off 19 balls to stage a late fightback for the Warriorz and it was also the top scorer for the team. Shweat Sehrawat (31) and Deepti Sharma (25) were the other mere contributors in the team. Sneh Rana, who replaced Shreyanka Patil was the best bowler for RCB, returning with figures of 3 for 27.

Star all-rounder Ellyse Perry’s 90 off 56 balls didn’t help her team to fruition as RCB suffered a defeat in a thrilling game.

UP Warriorz defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in a thrilling Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 match, marking the first-ever Super Over in WPL history.
