Pakistan set to sack head coach Aaqib Javed after Champions Trophy debacle – Report

New Delhi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly planning to overhaul the Pakistan men’s cricket team’s support staff team after Mohammad Rizwan & Co.’s early exit from the Champions Trophy 2025. After losing their opening game against New Zealand, Pakistan suffered a crushing six-wicket defeat against arch-rivals India in their second group-stage game in Dubai on Sunday.

The two back-to-back losses pushed Pakistan on the brink of elimination but New Zealand’s victory against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on Monday confirmed the hosts’ exit from the multi-nation tournament. New Zealand defeated Bangladesh by 5 wickets to bag their second win in a row and qualify for the semi-finals along with India from Group A.

As per a report in PTI, the Pakistan Cricket Board is reportedly set to sack Pakistan’s head coach Aaqib Javed after the team’s disastrous show in the Champions Trophy 2025. Javed was appointed as the interim head coach after PCB sacked Jason Gillespie as Pakistan’s Test coach last year. A PCB source stated that a major overhaul of the coaching staff is planned in the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing show in the tournament.

“Obviously there is backlash over the team’s performance in the CT. The Board hasn’t decided as yet on whether the team will have separate head coaches (for red and white ball teams) but one thing is certain the current support staff will be overhauled now after the poor show in the Champions Trophy,” a PCB source was quoted as saying by PTI.

“But the way the Board has been changing coaches and selectors since last year, it will be a challenge to find other candidates for these positions,” he added.
