Former Indian cricketer set to succeed Trevor Bayliss as head coach of Punjab Kings – Report

New Delhi: After the culmination of Trevor Bayliss’ two-year contract with Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Punjab Kings (PBKS), a search for the new head coach seems possibly over. PBKS in a statement few days back said that they were bent upon appointing an Indian coach for the franchise believing that he would play the role better.

According to a report in Indian Express,  PBKS is planning to reappoint former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer as their head coach ahead of the IPL 2025 season. This development comes merely days after the franchise said that they were looking for an Indian coach.

Jaffer set to rejoin Punjab

As per the report, Jaffer is set to rejoin the Punjab franchise for the 18th edition of the cash-rich league, marking his third tenure with the side. Earlier, the former Indian player served as the batting coach of PBKS from the year 2019 to 2021 but resigned ahead of the IPL 2022 auction. Before the previous season, he was released from his role as batting consultant by the side.

The Punjab franchise experienced a significant decline after relieving the Indian domestic legend from his role within the franchise. They suffered at the ninth place out of the 10 franchises, finishing just above the Mumbai Indians side, who ended their disastrous campaign at the bottom of the standings.

The veteran domestic player represented India in 31 Test matches and has a big challenge upon his return to the setup. PBKS would aim for a revival in their fortunes in the upcoming season of the league, after failing to reach the playoffs for the ten successive seasons, since their only appearance in the IPL final in 2014. It will also be interesting to see whether the franchise sticks with Shikhar Dhawan as the skipper or the southpaw will be replaced by some younger star.

PBKS is set to finalise a new Indian head coach for the franchise ahead of the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
