New Delhi: Joe Thompson, a former midfielder for Rochdale, passed away at the age of 36. Five years after he stopped playing, he received his third cancer diagnosis in April of last year. After twice recovering from stage four lymphoma, a form of blood cancer, during his playing career, it was discovered that the disease had migrated to his lungs. The player, who was born in Bath, played for Rochdale for three stints before ending his career there. Rochdale stated that they were “devastated” and he died quietly at home on Thursday, surrounded by his loved ones.
“We first knew Joe primarily as a talented footballer, but we would soon grow to adore his loving, infectious personality,” Rochdale said.
“He faced every battle head-on, both on and off the pitch. His journey and indomitable spirit have been an inspiration for everyone who has been touched by his story.
“Above all of that, Joe was a loving husband to Chantelle and an incredible father to Thailula and Athena Rae.
“Our thoughts are with Joe’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”

Who was Joe Thompson and what happened to him?
Hodgkin lymphoma was initially identified in 2013 and again in 2017 for Thompson. However, he memorably scored the goal that kept Rochdale from being relegated from League One in 2018 despite receiving the all-clear twice. After making 203 appearances for Rochdale, he declared that he had “pushed his body to the absolute limit” and announced his retirement from the game in 2019.
After completing Manchester United’s academy at the age of nine, Thompson joined Dale, where he played for much of his 13-year career. In addition, he played for Bury, Carlisle United, Southport, and Tranmere Rovers. While at Tranmere in 2013, he received his initial diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma. The following year, he was declared the all-clear.
He received another cancer diagnosis in March 2017 during his third stint with Dale, however he was told he was in “complete remission” and was able to resume playing football during the 2017–18 season. Thompson said his goal was “written in the stars, fate, destiny” when he scored against Charlton Athletic in his best game for Rochdale, guaranteeing their spot in League One for another season.
After his playing career ended, Thompson held positions in the media as a motivational speaker, mentor, and pundit. After receiving his third cancer diagnosis, he participated in a 21-mile fundraising walk in October 2024 to increase awareness of cancer therapies. The trek from Rochdale’s Crown Oil Arena home to Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium drew about 300 participants.
