WATCH: MS Dhoni, R Ashwin turn back the clock to outfox Nitish Rana in RR vs CSK clash

New Delhi: MS Dhoni and R Ashwin combined to rewind the clock by outfoxing Nitish Rana during Chennai Super Kings (CSK)’s clash against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday, March 30. Rana was looking in dangerous touch and was racing towards his century when Ashwin got him stumped with a clever delivery during RR’s innings at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati.

The dismissal took place in the 12th over of RR’s innings when Rana was batting on 81. The left-hander was playing a blinder of a knock and was particularly aggressive against Ashwin, taking the veteran off spinner to the cleaners. However, Ashwin managed to have the last laugh by getting the better of the left-hander.

After getting hit for a six and a four on his first two deliveries, Ashwin decided to outwit Rana with a wide delivery outside off. The spinner saw Rana moving out of his crease during his run-up and took a slight pause to deliver the ball quicker and out of his reach. Dhoni was aware of Rana’s movement behind the stumps and comfortably collected the ball before dislodging the bails to stump the RR batter.

Dhoni and Ashwin combining to dismiss the batter invoked nostalgia for millions of CSK fans around the world. Ashwin was also relieved and elated after the wicket, having being taken to the cleaners by Rana earlier in his spell.

Ashwin leaks runs as RR post 182/9 against CSK

Ashwin had a dismal day with the ball as he finished with expensive figures of 46/1 off his four overs against the Royals. It was the first time this season that Ashwin got to complete his quota of four overs but failed to put the brakes on RR’s scoring rate when Rana was going all guns blazing in the middle. Thanks to Rana’s blistering knock of 81 off just 36 balls, RR managed to post 182 runs on the board in 20 overs.

RR looked set for a total over 200 runs when Rana was going strong in the middle, but the CSK bowlers made a terrific comeback to restrict the hosts to 182 runs in 20 overs. While Noor Ahmad did well in the middle overs, Matheesha Pathirana bowled exceptionally well in the death overs for CSK. Both bowlers picked up two wickets apiece to keep RR below 200.
