New Delhi: India’s hopes of securing a wrestling medal were ended in dramatic circumstances after Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Olympics after being found overweight ahead of her women’s 50kg final at the Paris 2024 Olympics
In a heartbreaking twist of fate, Vinesh was disqualified from the Olympic finals on the morning of her gold medal bout.
Defying all the odds and winning the off-field battles for more than a year, Vinesh had scripted history on Tuesday by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the Olympic final.
She defeated reigning Olympic gold medallist and four-time world champion Yui Susaki of Japan 3-2 in the pre-quarterfinal before edging past Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5 to qualify for the semifinal.
She then outclassed Yusneylys Guzmán Lopez 5-0 to become the first Indian woman to enter the Olympics final.
But her dreams of winning an Olympic medal, in her third appearance, were shattered in cruel fashion on Wednesday morning.
The Indian Olympic Association notified the press about the development and requested privacy for the wrestler.
How 150gms cost Vinesh the Olympic medal?
According to a report in Indian Express, Vinesh was approximately 2 kilos overweight on Tuesday night few hours after sealing her berth in the final.
After being made aware of the development, she didn’t sleep the whole night and tried everything to shed the extra weight and meet the criteria. From jogging to skipping and cycling, she did everything possible to make the cut.
However, all her efforts went in vain as she was found 150 gm overweight on Wednesday morning – the day of her gold medal bout. According to sources, the Indian delegation asked the officials for some more time to shed the weight, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.
