From India Gate to Marine Drive: Watch how India celebrated the historic T20 World Cup win

New Delhi: India finally ended their long-standing World Cup jinx on Saturday, June 29 after edging past South Africa in a nail-biting final of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. 36 hours after the landmark win, the feeling hasn’t sunk in yet.

Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue scripted history by becoming the first team to win the T20 World Cup undefeated. The class of 24 Invincibles fulfilled the dream of the billions, who longed for this moment since MS Dhoni’s India won the 2011 ODI World Cup at home. Since that historic victory at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India played seven World Cups, featured in two finals, but returned empty-handed on each occasion.

The victory in the Caribbean acted as a balm for every World Cup heartbreak. The nail-biting win sparked wild celebrations in the Indian camp with some players even breaking down after the monumental win. Rohit Sharma emulated Novak Djokovic by eating the soil of the Kensington Oval, Virat Kohli, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj and Axar Patel dazzled the fans with their Bhangra moves.

Rohit’s ‘Ric Flair’ walk on his way to lift the trophy also broke the internet. While the players and coaching staff celebrated the historic win thousands of miles away from their family and friends, the Indian fans honoured their team by flocking to the streets in every corner of the country and celebrating the landmark moment in the history of Indian cricket.

From New Delhi’s India Gate to Mumbai’s Marine Drive, fans, in a magical night of celebrations, flooded the streets in numbers to salute their heroes.

Indian fans await the arrival of their heroes

The country now awaits eagerly for the return of their heroes. The expected arrival of the T20 World Cup-winning squad was on Monday but it is currently stranded in Barbados. The Caribbean Island has been shut down due to hurricane Beryl, which has intensified with maximum sustained winds of 210 kmph.

The Men In Blue were supposed to fly from New York via Dubai but might take charter flight back home due to the inclement weather.
