Gary Neville’s visit to India aims to boost grassroots football initiatives

New Delhi: Former Manchester United star Gary Neville is all set to visit India, show support for grassroots-level football programmes in the country, and inspire more kids to take up the sport. Neville is often considered to be the best right-back to have ever graced the field of football.

The former United captain will be in attendance at the finale of the fourth edition of Apollo Tyres’ flagship grassroots football programme, United We Play, in Chandigarh on October 18th, 2024. The programme is an initiative from Man United to promote young football talent globally and provide a platform for aspiring players to show their skills. The ultimate aim of the programme is to introduce these young talents to international-level training methodologies.

Throughout his career, the 49-year-old played for just Manchester United, an association that started at the youth level of football when Neville was 16 and lasted 20 years. Neville made 602 appearances and played 85 games for England in his 12-year career.

With the programme expanding this season across the Middle East and South Asia, with cities like Kathmandu, Bangkok, Dubai, and Dhaka, Neville’s arrival is the icing on the cake. Rajesh Dahiya, Vice President, Commerical, India and SAARC of Apollo Tyres Ltd, expressed his delight at Neville’s presence in Chandigarh to witness the aspiring footballers in action. He hoped that the upcoming players would be inspired by Nevellie’s career.

United We Play kicked off in Kolkata in December last year, with former United star Louis Saha attending the event. The idea is to involve as many schools and coaches as possible in the programme so that young players grow as footballers with updated training techniques.
