New Delhi: India brought an end to a 17-year-long wait for their second T20 World Cup trophy after beating South Africa in the final at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday, June 29. India defeated the Proteas by 7 runs in a thrilling final to lay their hands on the elusive title and became the first team to clinch gory while remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament.
Batting first in the highly-anticipated summit clash, India got off to a poor start as they lost captain Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant inside three balls in the second over. However, Virat Kohli played a brilliant knock of 76 runs and combined with Axar Patel (47) and Shivam Dube (27) to propel India to a strong total of 176 runs in 20 overs.
India broke Australia’s record to post the highest-ever total in a T20 World Cup final. After the fightback from batters, Indian bowlers led by ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah produced a brilliant combined effort to stop the Proteas at 169/8 in 20 overs. Despite Heinrich Klaasen’s blazing 27-ball 52, India managed to successfully defend the total of 176 runs and script a famous win in Barbados.
There were celebrations and jubilation all around as the Indian players celebrated the memorable triumph on the ground. Rohit was seen doing a special walk to the stage as he collected the trophy from BCCI secretary Jay Shah. The Indian players erupted in celebrations during the trophy ceremony, a video of which was shared by the ICC.

India end long-standing ICC title drought
The T20 World Cup 2024 title also marked an end to India’s long-standing ICC trophy drought. The Men in Blue had not won an ICC trophy since their Champions Trophy triumph in 2013 despite coming close on several occasions. India played five finals in major ICC events after 2013 but failed to win any of them.
However, that was not the case in Barbados on Saturday as India held their nerves during South Africa’s tense run-chase to pull off a close 7-run win and bring an end to their 11-year-long wait for an ICC trophy. India are now the only third team after West Indies and England to have won the T20 World Cup title twice.
