New Delhi: Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket at the end of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Brisbane on Wednesday, December 18.
With the five-match series levelled at 1-1, Ashwin announced his retirement after playing the second Test in Adelaide. Ashwin was seen having a long chat with Virat Kohli during the rain break after Tea on Day 5, after which both cricketers shared an emotional hug.
Ashwin drew curtains to a sensational 14-year career. He finished as India’s second-highest Test wicket-taker, with 537 scalps in 106 Test matches. He bagged 37 Test five-wicket hauls, only second to Muttiah Muralidaran (67). He was part of India’s 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy winning campaigns. The 38-year-old has bagged 765 wickets across formats.

‘I heard about Ashwin’s retirement when I landed in Perth’: Rohit Sharma
Indian captain Rohit Sharma praised Ravichandran Ashwin and said that he’s a true match-winner and a great servant of Indian cricket. He further added that he has delivered great performances whenever the team was in crisis.
“A true match winner. Whenever crisis, he has delivered. Such a great servant of Indian cricket. He is a very witty guy, funny guy as you just saw in the press conference” Rohit said in the post-match press conference after third Test.
Rohit further added that he heard about Ashwin’s retirement when he landed in Perth and when he arrived he had a chat with Ashwin as the management was not sure which spinner was going to play. Rohit also said that he convinced Ashwin to stay for Adelaide Test.
“I heard (about Ashwin’s retirement) first when I landed in Perth. It was obviously lots of things that goes in process. He understands what team is thinking, what combination we thinking. We weren’t sure about which spinner was going to play. When I arrived in Perth that was the chat we had. I somehow convinced him to stay for Adelaide. He felt now that if I am not needed, its better to go now. We should respect him. His decision” Rohit added.
