New Delhi: Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh has been nominated for the FIH Player of the Year award after playing an instrumental role in his team’s bronze medal triumph at the Paris Olympics 2024. Harmanpreet was a lethal presence in front of the goal throughout India’s campaign in Paris and finished the tournament as the highest goal scorer.
Harmanpreet led his team from the front, helping them bag a second successive bronze medal at the Olympics having also finished third on the podium at the last edition in Tokyo. India’s goalkeeping great PR Sreejesh, who announced his retirement after the Paris Olympics, has been nominated for the Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Sreejesh too was in terrific form for India in the Paris Olympics 2024 and pulled off numerous crucial saves for his team under pressure situations. Sreejesh’s goalkeeping brilliance was one of the reasons behind the Indian hockey team’s second successive podium finish at the showpiece event.
Regarded as one of the best goalkeepers of all time, Sreejesh drew curtains on his legendary career after making a whopping 336 appearances from India from 2006 to 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently written a heartfelt letter to Sreejesh where he referred to him as the “wall that stood between victory and defeat” for India.
Harmanpreet Singh’s goal-scoring heroics at Paris Olympics
Harmanpreet was arguably India’s best player at the Paris Olympics 2024 and went on a goal-scoring spree in the tournament. Leading from the front, the 28-year-old defender, who also plays as a midfielder, scored 10 goals for India in 8 matches at the Olympics to finish on top of the scoring charts. Australia’s Blake Govers finished 2nd with 7 goals in the competition.
In the bronze medal match against Spain, Harmanpreet was the saviour as he scored both goals to help India bounce back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory. The bronze medal win saw India claim back-to-back Olympic medals for the first time since 1972.
