New Delhi: Indian para archer Harvinder Singh scripted history on Wednesday after winning the first-ever gold medal for India in archery at the Paralympics. With this, India’s medal tally rose to 22 at the Paralympic Games. Harvinder claimed the gold medal after beating Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek 6-0 in the final of the men’s individual recurve open event.
This is India’s first Paralympic gold medal in archery and also his second Paralympic medal. Harvinder completely dominated the event, etching his name in the history books. It was India’s second medal on Wednesday after world Champion Sachin Sarjerao Khilari clinched the 21st medal for the nation at Paris Paralympics, winning a silver in Men’s Shot Put F46 event.

Earlier, the Tokyo Games bronze-winner para athlete became the first Indian archer to enter the Paralympic finals by securing four wins in a row in the men’s recurve open competition. Harvinder overturned a 1-3 deficit to triumph over Mohammad Reza Arab Ameri of Iran 7-3 in the last-four stage. In the quarterfinals, the Indian para archer beat world number nine Hector Julio Ramirez of Colombia.
Earlier, he knocked out Tseng Lung-Hui of Chinese Taipei 7-3 in round of 32 before overcoming an opening set deficit to edge out Setiawan Setiawan of Indonesia 6-2 in the last-16 round.
