New Delhi: Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh defeated Ding Liren in the final and secured the World Chess Championship title on Thursday, December 12. He is only the second Indian to win the title after Viswanathan Anand.
The Indian star claimed the famous win over the defending champion who was the favourite to win the title. But the scores tied at 6.5 and Gukesh took advantage of the mistake made by his Chinese rival. His victory in game 14 resulted in a final score of 7.5 against 6.5 of Liren.
He also surpasses the previous record held by Russia’s legendary Garry Kasparov who won the title at the age of 22 while Gukesh achieved this feat at the age of 18.
