How to differentiate between Asian and African Elephants?

New Delhi: Asian and African elephants are famous land animals, often mistaken for each other due to their similar species. However, despite their shared classification, these two varieties exhibit distinct physical features that set them apart. This article will delve into a detailed analysis of the contrasting physical characteristics that distinguish Asian and African elephants from each other.

Difference between Asian and African Elephants

The physical differences between Asian and African elephants are quite remarkable. Understanding these differences not only adds to our knowledge but also helps us appreciate the unique characteristics of these well-known elephant species.

Head

Asian elephants have a distinctive twin-domed head with a visible indent along the centre, while African elephants have fuller, more rounded heads with a single dome shape.

Ears

Additionally, Asian elephant ears are much smaller and almost semi-circular in shape, whereas African elephant ears are significantly larger and resemble the shape of the African continent.

Height and weight

Asian elephants are comparatively smaller, with adults reaching heights of around 3.5 metres, while African elephants are larger, reaching heights of about 4 metres. This is also reflected in their weight, as Asian elephants typically weigh between 3000 and 6000 kg, whereas African elephants weigh between 4000 and 8000 kg.

Tusks

The tusks of the two species also differ. Only male Asian elephants have tusks, while females have rudimentary tusks called tushes. In contrast, both male and female African elephants have tusks.

Lips and skin

Furthermore, the characteristics of their lips and skin vary. Asian elephants have long, tapered lower lips and smoother skin, while African elephants have short, round lower lips and rough, wrinkled skin.

Teeth

Even their teeth exhibit distinct differences. Asian elephants have a compressed diamond-shaped tooth profile, whereas African elephant teeth are ‘loxodont’ or sloping, reflected in their scientific name, Africana Loxodonta.

Habitat

Geographically, the two species also have different ranges. Asian elephants are found in Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. In contrast, African elephants range across the rainforests of West and Central Africa and through the savannas and deserts of Africa.

Lifespan

The lifespan of these majestic creatures varies. Asian elephants can live up to 48 years, while African elephants can live up to 70 years, demonstrating the remarkable longevity of these intelligent animals.

Ribs

Asian elephants have an average of 20 pairs of ribs, whereas African elephants have more ribs than Asian ones. African Elephants have 21 pairs of ribs.

Diet

Asian elephants are daintier eaters, preferring more grasses, bamboo and palms to tree saplings. In contrast, African elephants act as ecological filters by breaking tree saplings and stripping them of their foliage.
