Hyderabad: GHMC prepares for monsoon, arrangements on to cover manholes

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is making arrangements to close manholes in the city ahead of the onset of monsoon season.

It includes covering manholes with grills, painting those on arterial roads with red paint, planting a red flag on roads which are prone to waterlogging.

There are about 635,000 official manholes in the city, including 63,221 which are categorised as deep manholes, of which 42 percent is located within the GHMC limits.

While discussing monsoon action plans, Hyderabad Metropolitan Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director C Sudarshan Reddy said that covering manholes with grills is a part of a broader safety plan and that most of the work has been completed.

Sudarshan Reddy also laid emphasis on supplying clean drinking water and effective sewer management while speaking to officials. “No contaminated water supply and chlorine in water should be ensured,” he told water board officials.

He also said that waterlogged points must be identified, cleanup of silt, installing warning boards, provision of protective gear for field staff should be a part of the work daily work checklist. Staff have been appointed to monitor waterlogging points and manholes.

A six-team member of Central Safety Protocol Cell, which was set up in 2022, will play an important role to ensure safety measures are implemented effectively. With these measures, the HMWSSB aims to mitigate risks of manholes during the monsoon season.
