‘I will do whatever asked of me’: Ailing Vinod Kambli hails doctor as his life saver

New Delhi: Ailing former India cricketer Vinod Kambli is grateful towards doctors of Akruti Hospital for “keeping him alive”, after suffering yet another health scare and being rushed to the medical facility in Thane.

He was admitted to the hospital on Saturday with worsening health, as he is suffering from multiple conditions. The former left hand batter complained of uneasiness and abdominal pain when he was rushed him to the hospital at Bhiwandi’s Kalher area in Thane.

The owner of the hospital, an ardent fan of Kambli, admitted him and has reportedly promised to take care of his medical bills. Kambli underwent multiple tests and upon treatment became stable but continues to be treated in ICU.

“We always had a cricketing image of sir (Vinod Kambli) in our mind. So, it inspired us that sir needs us and so, the entire team decide to do something for sir. He keeps telling us about his good memories,” a doctor at the Akruti Hospital said, as quoted by NDTV.

‘I am alive’

Kambli said he feels indebted to the doctors who treated him back to life. “It is because the doctor here that I am alive… All I would say is that I will do whatever sir (referring to the doctor) asks me to. People will see the inspiration that I’ll give them,” he said.

Doctors said Kambli is out of danger from urinary infection but not fit enough to be discharged from hospital.

The 52-year-old is regarded as one of Indian cricket’s greatest unfulfilled promises, having shot to life in school cricket with childhood pal Sachin Tendulkar.

Both were coached by Ramakant Achrekar, on whose memorial service the two met after a long time. Kambli was seen grabbing the hand of Tendulkar and striving to strike a conversation, videos of which were widely circulated on social media.

It put sharp focus on his worsening health condition since retirement that has been compounded by financial woes.
