Kohli had a sore knee ahead and hence missed the match. Iyer responded with a quickfire half-century. The visitors opted to bat first in the first ODI and were bundled out for 248 runs. Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell scored half-centuries. Harshit Rana and Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets each for the team.
Chasing the 249 runs target, India lost two quick wickets but Gill forged two match-winning partnerships with Axar and Iyer and helped the team to chase down the target comfortably. Gill scored 87 runs off 96 balls while Axar and Shreyas also notched up half-centuries.
