New Delhi: Team India captain Shubman Gill is facing the wrath of netizens as India lock horns with Zimbabwe in the 5th T20I at the Harare Sports Club in Harare. Having already clinched the series and looking to make it 4-1 with a fourth successive win, Gill brought in a few changes in the playing eleven for India which he announced at the coin toss.
Although the result won’t make any major difference as India have already won the series, the changes made to the eleven weren’t received well by the fans. Gill at the toss said Ruturaj Gaikwad won’t be playing the game and Riyan Parag has been brought in to replace him. The other change was benching Khaleel Ahmed and getting the services of Mukesh Kumar for the game.
Meanwhile, Gaikwad, who hasn’t played his part wrong in the series, is the third-highest run-scorer for the Men in Blue. Gaikwad struck an unbeaten 77 in the 2nd T20I and 49 in the 3rd T20I. He didn’t get to bat in the 4th T20I and was benched for the final T20I which turned out to be a problem for the CSK skipper’s fans who haven’t been very kind to Gill.
Venting it out on social media, the fans have hit out at Gill, calling him a “selfish” and “insecure” player. Fans allege that he benched Gaikwad to secure and fix his own spot in the playing eleven following the addition of T20 World Cup 2024 winners Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube. Gill was made Gujarat Titans’ skipper ahead of IPL 2024 and didn’t live up to the expectations. The social media users are drawing parallels with his IPL captaincy stint and are deeming him as an unworthy captain of the Indian team for his rash decisions.
