India at Paris Olympics: 10m air rifle shooters, men’s archery team missed podium finish chance

New Delhi: India didn’t find any success in terms of medals on Monday (July 29) with rifle shooters missing on the podiums and the men’s archery team bowing in the quarterfinals. Arjun Babuta and Ramita Jindal finished fourth and seventh in the men’s and women’s 10m air rifle individual finals at the Chateaurox Shooting Centre.

While Ramita started off well but couldn’t keep with her consistency and was elminated after 14 shots with a total score of 145.3, Arjun maintained his run in the top three spots until the 16th shot. A 10.1 shot in the 16th shot led to the Punjab shooter sliding to fourth place. Arjun was eliminated subsequently after the completion of the 18th shot, ending a dream of a podium finish.

A day after winning a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol, youngster Manu Bhaker qualified for the mixed team bronze medal match along with Sarabjot Singh. The pair finished third in the event with a score of 580 points from 20 shots. Manu and Sarabjot will face South Korean pair of Xue Li and Wonho Lee in the bronze medal match on Tuesday. Another team of Rhythm Sangwan and Arjun Singh Cheema was eliminated after finishing at the 10th position with 576 points and 14 perfect shots.

This ended the hopes of Indian archers to win an elusive medal in team events after the women’s team lost their quarterfinal against the Netherlands on Sunday.

Ace Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty qualified for the quarterfinal stage despite their match against German pair of Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel was cancelled. Lakshya Sen came stronger against Belgium shuttler Julien Carraggi, though the Indian was lacking behind in the first game, but wrapped it in straight games.

The Indian men’s hockey team held on Argentina in a 1-1 draw affair after captain Harmanpreet Singh scored a late goal from a penalty corner.
