India Issues Helplines for Stranded Citizens as Nepal Comes to Standstill Amid Floods

Kathmandu: As Nepal’s situation continues to remain grim, India has issued helpline numbers for its citizens stranded in the country due to floods and landslides over the past few days. The advisory follows record rainfall over the weekend that triggered severe flooding and landslides, causing widespread damage across the country.

In a post on social media platform X, the Indian Embassy in Nepal expressed its concern, stating, “There has been widespread damage due to floods and landslides on account of record rainfall over the weekend. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.”

The advisory added, “The Embassy is in touch with some of these groups and arranging for their safe return,” the advisory added. Meanwhile, Nepal’s Home Ministry reported that the death toll from the floods and landslides had crossed the 215-mark by on Tuesday, with nearly 30 people missing and 194 injured. Rescue efforts have so far saved over 4,500 people, with security forces working to clear blocked highways and reach affected areas.

Government data showed that 1,327 houses were destroyed, and 19 major highways suffered damage, complicating rescue and recovery efforts. Security forces, including personnel from the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police, continue to be mobilized in search and rescue missions.

The disaster, which began last Thursday, affected multiple provinces, displacing thousands. Eastern and central Nepal have been heavily inundated since Friday. The Kathmandu Valley has been hit the hardest, with over 50 deaths reported.

Though weather conditions improved in Kathmandu from Sunday, providing some relief, the damage caused by the incessant rain from Thursday to Saturday has left the country grappling with significant destruction.
