New Delhi: Jio heiress Isha Ambani, in a recent interaction, opened up about her stint with IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) and welcoming her twins through the same route. In an interaction, she revealed that IVF is a difficult process and one must not feel ashamed or isolated for opting for it. She also revealed that the process is such that it can make one feel physically exhausted. She spoke about living in a world of technology and also spoke about using the same to have children as well, now that it is a possibility. Also, she spoke about why it must not be something one should hide, rather people should find support groups to help others find it easier.
What is IVF?
IVF or in-vitro fertlisation is a fertility treatment that allows couples to conceive a baby relatively easily. It involves fertilising a sperm and an egg outside the body and planting the same artificially to get pregnant.
In an interaction with News9Live Dr. Pallavi Prasad, Fertility Consultant at Nova IVF Fertility, Basaveshwara Nagar, Bengaluru, spoke about IVF and the challenges involved with the same.
“IVF is indeed a complex but very efficient fertility treatment involving many stages. First, ovarian stimulation is conducted on the patient by injecting hormones, which would then prompt the ovaries to release multiple eggs. After retrieval, the eggs are then fertilized with sperm in the laboratory via a minor surgical procedure. After a few days of development, one or more healthy embryos are transferred to the uterus of the patient to achieve a successful pregnancy,” said Dr Prasad.
The journey could be infused with anticipation and anxiety, and the patients are made to go through cycles, with each cycle treated with hormone injections, medical procedures, and the everlasting hope of getting good results. That itself creates the need for a great support system around the people from family and doctors to help them mitigate that stress and emotional toll.
What are the challenges involved with IVF?
It is in the fertility treatment arena that much outreach has been given to many suffering from infertility. Other than IVF, some assisted reproduction technologies include Intrauterine Insemination, besides egg freezing, to just mention a few, all designed to treat a wide array of fertility problems. Individual care and state-of-the-art technology have made success stories manifold, opening many choices to prospective parents.
