Jagananna out, Chandranna, NTR in! AP government welfare schemes renamed

The new alliance government in Andhra Pradesh is on a renaming spree of many welfare schemes by removing the names of ex-cm Jagan Reddy and his late father YSR.

The government has renamed six welfare schemes, giving generic names to four of them, one named after former CM NTR and one after current CM Chandrababu Naidu.

Jagananna Vidya Deevena and Jagananna Vasathi Deevena have been renamed as Post Matric Scholarships, RTF and MTF. Jagananna Videshi Vidya Deevena (for SCs) has been renamed as Ambedkar Overseas Vidya Nidhi (AOVN) and YSR Kalyana Masthu is now called Chandranna Pelli Kanuka. YSR Vidyonnathi is renamed to NTR Vidyonnathi, Jagananna Civil Services Protsahakam (JCSP) is called Incentives for Civil Services Examination.

The government has also renamed the Naadu-Nedu website of Department of School Education as ‘School Infrastructure Improvement.’

This comes in the background of a humiliating defeat of YSRCP in the 2024 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. The TDP in alliance with Janasena and BJP swept up power in the state with 164 Assembly seats and 21 Parliament seats.

Meanwhile, the ruling TDP has accused the YSRCP of splurging Rs 500 crore of public money to build a palatial mansion for Jagan Reddy’s own use. In reference to the Rushikonda Hill Project, a sea-facing mansion built atop the hill, with ultra-expensive amenities, while also violating environmental norms.

The party said that the hilltop house is fitted with 200 chandeliers, each one costing up to Rs 15 lakh while the interior design alone reportedly cost Rs 33 crore.

YSRCP has however, denied the allegations saying that it was built for government use.
