James Maddison nets Tottenham’s fastest goal since Christian Eriksen’s 2018 strike

New Delhi: Tottenham Hotspur are running riot at the St. Mary’s Stadium, as the the Southampton goalkeeper, Alex McCarthy has alreay picked up the ball five times from the back of his net and it’s only half time. Spurs have looked extremely relentless from the very first minute of the game as they took the lead in the first forty seconds. Djed Spence came into the play, squirmed out of Southampton player’s way, and then passed the ball to James Maddison. The Tottenham star ran ten times flawlessly before slipping under McCarthy and finding the far corner to give visitors the lead.

This goal by Maddison is the fastest goal that Spurs have scored since Christian Eriksen’s goal against Manchester United back in 2018, which was scored in just 11 seconds after the kick off. This is truly turning out to be a goalfest for Spurs who are carrying a 5-0 lead into the second half.

Southampton, who trail 5-0 to a revitalized Tottenham following one of the most lopsided first half displays in Premier League history, are given a slight reprieve when the halftime whistle sounds. Spurs seized the lead in the first 36 seconds through Maddison. Heung Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski both scored close range goals shortly after one other to give Spurs a 3-0 lead a little more than ten minutes later. Pape Sarr’s calm finish after a strong run further increased Saints’ suffering halfway through the half.

Adam Armstrong did have two chances to cut Southampton’s deficit, but he missed them both by first heading straight at Fraser Forster and missing the near post. Maddison’s second goal at the end of the first half made it 5-0. Spurs are more likely to go and score ten goals in the second session, while the Saints appear to be in a dead and buried state. It has been a fantastic performance by the visitors, while it is already turning out to be a long night for Southampton and Russel Martin.
