New Delhi: England star Joe Root scripted history on Saturday as he became the first batter in the world to complete 1,000 runs in three World Test Championship (WTC) cycles. Root achieved the remarkable feat en route to his brilliant knock of 87 runs in England’s first innings of their ongoing third Test against West Indies at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
Walking out to bat at no.5., Root continued his fine form with the willow for the hosts as he smashed 87 runs off 124 balls in their first innings to help them post 376 runs on the board in their first innings. The senior England batter now has 1023 runs to his name in 13 Test matches played in the current WTC 2023-25 cycle.
Root is the only batter in the world with more than 1000 runs in all three WTC cycles so far. He amassed 1660 runs in 20 matches in the 2019-21 World Test Championship and followed it up with 1915 runs in 22 matches in the last edition in 2021-23. He has 1023 runs in 13 matches in the 2023-25 cycle.

Root, who notched up his 32nd Test century in the last game against West Indies, is currently the second-highest run-getter in the World Test Championship 2023-25. He is only behind Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is sitting on the top of the elite list with 1028 runs.
Root is also the leading run-getter of all time in the World Test Championship with an impressive 4598 runs in 55 matches at an average of 49.97, including 14 centuries and 19 fifties. Australia’s Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne are the only other two batters who have scored more than 1,000 runs in the first two WTC cycles.
Joe Root surpasses Brian Lara
Root also went past Brian Lara in the elite list of the highest run-getters in Test cricket en route to his 87-run knock in England’s first innings of the 2nd Test. Root became only the seventh batter to complete 12,000 runs in Test cricket, surpassing Lara, who finished his career with 11953 runs in 131 Test matches. Root is now just 74 runs away from going past Kumar Sangakkara to become the the sixth-highest run-getter in Test history.
