New Delhi: England announced their white-ball squads on Monday for the upcoming series against arch-rivals Australia, notably leaving out Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali, who were recently part of England’s failed title defense at the T20 World Cup 2024. Chris Jordan is another such omission as the veteran trio has paved the way for five uncapped players in the T20I squad.
Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell, Dan Mousley, Josh Hull, and John Turner have impressed at different levels in the domestic circuit which got them a maiden call-up. Regular white-ball skipper Jos Buttler will continue his role with premier pacer Jofra Archer also back in action. Buttler was dealing with a calf injury but has now fully recovered whereas Archer will be making an ODI comeback for England after a year and a half.
Talking about the five uncapped additions, Cox will provide England with another wicketkeeper’s option and his dynamic role as a top-order batter, where he has come good in domestic white-ball tournaments. Hull is indeed a worthy addition, given his left-arm angle and hit-the-deck ability. Turner, meanwhile has already made a name for himself with his pace during The Hundred.
Bethell and Mousely will fill the all-rounder’s shoes with batting being their stronger aspect. The selection of the duo signifies England’s continued preference for utility cricketers in shorter formats.
Other England regulars
The likes of Jamie Smith, Matthew Potts, Gus Atkinson, and Harry Brook, who currently feature in the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka, will be a part of the ODI setup only because the T20I leg of the Australia series kicks off just a day after the scheduled conclusion of the SL Tests. Mark Wood and Ben Stokes weren’t available for selections, having injured themselves. Wood copped a thigh injury during the first Test against Sri Lanka while Stokes is ruled out of the English summer with a hamstring tear.
The series between the archrivals will start with the T20I leg which kicks off on September 11 in Southampton. The three-match T20I series will conclude on September 15 and the five-match ODI series will kickstart on September 19 after that, going on till September 29. Marcus Trescothick has been named as the team’s interim coach for the series after England fired Matthew Mott as the head coach of the limited-overs side.
