Chennai: The Madras High Court on Friday questioned rationale of providing Rs. 10 lakh compensation to families of 65 people who died in Kallakurichi hooch tragedy. Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan asks how can Tamil Nadu Govt pay a huge amount of Rs.10 lakh and asked the Govt counsel to take instructions on reconsidering the amount. The Acting Cheif Justice also asked the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government to work out a mechanism other than such huge compensation for rehabilitating the family of victims. The High Court has made the comments were made on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the state government paying Rs. 10 lakh to victims as compensation.
Earlier, a PIL petition filed before the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Tamil Nadu Government to reverse its decision to pay compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of 65 persons who had lost their lives in Kallakurichi hooch tragedy.
Meanwhile, the Court adjourned the petition seeking CBI probe into the hooch tragedy to July 11 after Additional AG J Ravindran sought time citing the demise of mother of AG PS Raman. Meanwhile, already two petitions filed, now one more by BJP advocate Mohandas moved on same issue.
