Thiruvananthapuram: Almost two days after he went missing while clearing the waste under the Amayizhanchan canal in the capital city of Kerala, the body of sanitation worker Joy was found near iron bridge in the heart of the city. The body was found by two health and sanitation workers under Uppilamoodu iron bridge at Pazhavangadi area which is almost one kilometer away from the canal.
The body has been shifted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Joy’s family has been summoned to the hospital for identification. Authorities said the body was likely to be Joy’s as it was two-day-old.
The parents and relatives of Joy has officially confirmed the identity of Joy, said Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran to the media. Meanwhile, the sanitary workers and colleagues of Joy has confirmed his identity.
The body was first traced by an individual who was passing by in a two-wheeler. The person informed the corporation officials who then reached the spot and located the body, manage to pull out the body which was stuck in between the solid waste dump in the canal today at 8am.
The Municipality has assigned contingent staffs besides all streams and canals that are interconnected with the ‘Amayizhanchan’ canal where the sanitary worker Joy had gone missing.
The past 24 hours saw a rescue operation on a war-footing basis with scuba drivers, fire force, NDRF and finally the navy joining with help from the local administration.
Meanwhile, there was a blame-game that erupted between the railways and the corporation over waste dumping and waste management where senior officials of the railways stating that they have not dumped solid waste into the canal and alleged that the corporation is trying to shrug off from their official duties.
“We have always worked along with the corporation. We have ensured that the cleaning of the canal was done as per the orders and have informed the corporation. The area where the incident took place comes under the purview of the corporation”, said a senior official in the railways.
Meanwhile, Thiruvananthapuram corporation Mayor Arya Rajendran have blamed the railways over dumping solid waste in the canal. She said none of the railway officials had visited the spot while the rescue work was underway.
“The railway officials are responsible for the current situation. Corporation had requested the railways to take the necessary action. However, the railways failed to perform the duty”, she said to the media on Sunday.
The death of sanitation worker Joy has raised serious questions and concerns as far as the waste management in the capital city and the callous attitude of the officials who did not perform the duty.
Meanwhile, the body of Joy has been moved to the mortuary of the Trivandrum medical college.
The body has been shifted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Joy’s family has been summoned to the hospital where they had identified the body of Joy.
