Thiruvananthapuram : Two days after the death of sanitation worker Joy, various political groups from the opposition have called for the resignation of Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran alleging that the corporation has allegedly failed miserably in maintaining the canals in the city even as financial allocations for its maintenance was made by the state and the central government.
The BJP councillors in the capital city held a sit-in protest outside the Mayor’s office today demanding her resignation over the alleged mismanagement and inability to clean and clear the solid waste that was accumulated in the ‘Amayizhanchan’ canal where the 47-year-old sanitation worker had lost his life after he was drowned while he stepped into the canal for clearing the waste materials.
“The corporation of Thiruvananthapuram headed by the CPI(M) is indulged in large scale corruption as the funds meant for the canal maintenance is diverted for other purposes. The agencies meant for clearing the waste are all CPM leaders. We demand the immediate resignation of the Mayor Arya who has been a mere spectator when the situation became bad to worse and now blaming the railways for the current scenario. Tomorrow we are holding a protest to the corporation office”, said VV Rajesh, senior BJP leader, Kerala.
SHRC issues notice to railways
The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the railways over the death of sanitation worker Madhu while he was engaged in cleaning the Amayizhanchan canal passes through the railway land. The SHRC in its notice said that we before taking a final decision on the matter, they would require the railways viewpoint on the matter. The divisional railway manager has been asked to file a reply within seven working days on the matter.
The state government has decided to handover Rs 10 lakh to the family of Joy and also built a house for Joy’s mother.
