New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) retention rules were announced by the IPL governing council on Saturday after months of speculations over the strategies of franchises for the IPL mega auction expected to be held later in the year.
Each IPL franchise can retain a maximum of six players, including the right-to-match (RTM) option. Only five capped players and not more than two uncapped players can be retained by a team. The IPL governing council has brought the old uncapped player rule back wherein an Indian player who hasn’t played international cricket for last five years and is not part of the central contract list under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is eligible to be deemed as uncapped player.
The deadline for all franchises to finalise and submit their retentions is October 31. If a player makes his international debut before October 31, 2024, then he will be considered as uncapped player. The uncapped player will cost a team INR 4 crore from their total purse of INR 120 crore, which is increased from INR 100 crore allotted last year.
Although not all 10 IPL franchises will retain as many as six players, let’s look at the possibilities of all players who can be considered for retentions if all existing teams aims for a six-player retention strategy, keeping the uncapped players in mind.
