New Delhi: Eight-time Premier League champions Manchester City set an unprecedented record by winning the Premier League title last season. They rewrote the history books with their triumph, becoming the first side to win four consecutive Premier League titles, surpassing Sir Alex Ferguson’s record of three league titles in a row. To celebrate their unprecedented achievement, the Champions have arrived in the country’s capital New Delhi.
The English club are visiting India as part of their trophy tour which is being presented by Etihad Airways, christened the club’s ‘Champions 4-in-a-row Trophy Tour.’ The club have brought their Premier League trophy to the capital along with the FA Community Shield and the Club World Cup trophy, the other two competitions where they’re still the defending champions. Accompanying the club’s trophies will be former Manchester City and England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.

He will be taking part in a wide range of activities for the club in the country, including a fan event on Sunday, 22nd September, where fans are invited to the screening of Manchester City versus Arsenal at Vegas Mall in Dwarka, New Delhi.

The winger commented to this visit to the country, stating that the club is excited to interact with their fanbase in the country. He also stated, “We’re really looking forward to visiting India as part of the Club’s Champions 4-in-a-row tour. The club were fortunate enough to visit last year and we’re excited to interact with our fan base in India again.”
Speaking ahead of the potential early season title decider against Arsenal, he also mentioned that fans are welcome to join the special event and screening on Sunday when his club takes on his dad’s old team. After overwhelming success over the last two seasons, the Citizens want to build on their success instead of resting on their laurels. They head into the game against Arsenal on top form, sitting top of the table once again following a 100% start to the Premier League season.
Manchester City are offering a free coaching course to everyone to upskill the community and grassroots coaches in an effort to promote healthier lives through football as part of this ‘Champions-4-in-A-Row Trophy Tour’. The club focuses heavily on youth football, as evidenced by them boasting one of the best academies in the world and this course is a part of their effort towards upskilling more than 150 community coaches to leave a lasting impact.
Media Interaction with Shaun Wright-Phillips
Ahead of the screening on Sunday, Shaun Wright-Phillips had an interesting session with members of the media as he joined for a session on the Star Sports Press Room, hosted by Star Sports, the official broadcaster of the Premier League in India. Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s visit to the Etihad on Sunday, the former winger shared his thoughts about Erling Haaland, Pep Guardiola, and who he thinks should win the Ballon d’Or next month?
Talking about what he expects from the Manchester City-Arsenal game, he was quick to say that it’ll be a tough game for both sides and neither will have it easy. He expects a midfield battle to ensue when these two giants meet and considering both teams are pretty solid defensively, Wright-Phillips said that he can see a goal being scored from outside the penalty box. In his view, Arsenal don’t look like the same team in the final third in the absence of captain Martin Odegaard, which will allow Manchester City to edge past Arsenal this weekend.
When asked about his views on Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, Wright-Phillips was quick to heap praises on the Spaniard. He mentioned how Pep has affected the footballing spectrum as a whole given how his views and methodology is being implemented by multiple clubs. He spoke about how the manager has ensured that his style of his play is being implemented across all of Manchester City’s teams which makes it hard for any other manager to achieve what Pep has achieved.
The discussion ended with a question about the three Manchester City players nominated for the Ballon d’Or, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and Rodri. Wright-Phillips was asked to choose his pick for the winner and the Englishman was quick to choose Rodri as his pick, citing his all-round play and the importance he holds in both the club and his national team. He did have a lot of praises for both Foden and Haaland throughout the session but picked Rodri for the biggest individual prize in football. Let’s wait and see if Wright proves to be right.
