New Delhi: The two neighbouring countries meet each other in Dublin in their opening Group A3 fixture as Ireland host England. The game has an interesting touch to it as we have an Irish manager in the English dugout and an Icelandic manager in the Irish dugout and both of them take charge of their first game as manager of the national team.
England, for the first time since 2016 head into a professional game without Gareth Southgate in the dugout as he resigned from his duty as manager after the UEFA Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. In his place, England U21 manager Lee Carsley has been named the interim boss of the senior team and he faces his home nation in his very first game.
Ireland, meanwhile replaced John O’Shea who was the interim manager of the team after Stephen Kelly left the national team, with Heimir Hallgrímsson in July of this year but he might not have even had the job had Lee Carsley had his say. The current England interim boss was offered the role of becoming Republic of Ireland’s manager in March of 2024 but he refused to accept it and chose to be loyal towards England U21, with whom he won the U21 European Championships.
Both managers are going head-to-head against one another in their debut and will be eager to get their tenure off on the right note. Apart from being a debut, this is a huge opportunity for Carsley particularly as a good showing from him can help him convert this interim role into a permanent one, just like the English FA did so with Carsley predecessor.
