Manu Bhaker misses out on 3rd medal, signs off from Paris Olympics 2024 with two bronze

New Delhi: Indian shooter Manu Bhaker missed out on a chance to create more history at the Paris Olympics 2024 as she failed to grab her third medal at the Games. Manu had a chance to become the first Indian to win as many as three medals in a single edition of the Olympics. However, she failed to find a place on the podium after finishing 4th in the final of the women’s 25m pistol event on Saturday, August 03.

All eyes were on the 22-year-old shooter from Jhajjar, Haryana as she made her way to her third final in less than 10 days at the shooting arena in Chateauroux on Saturday. Having won two bronze medals in the women’s 10m air pistol and the mixed team 10m air pistol events, Manu had a chance to become India’s most successful individual Olympian of all time.

However, it wasn’t meant to be as she ended up missing out on a medal closely in the women’s 25m pistol final. It was not the best of starts for Manu in the final as she managed only two hits in her first series. However, she bounced back with 4 hits in her next series to climb to the 4th spot on the leaderboard. She continued her good form in the next series as she pulled 4 hits to jump to the second spot.

Manu managed to maintain her second spot in the rankings after fourth elimination with 26 hits as she looked all but set to take a medal with only Korea’s Jiin Yaang ahead of her in the first spot. However, Manu got eliminated in the third-place shoot-off against Veronika Major of Hungary. Manu had 3 hits to Major’s 4 in the shoot-off which meant she had to settle for a 4th spot in the final.

Manu Bhaker signs off with 2 medals from Paris Olympics 2024

Despite losing out on a potential third medal, Manu enjoyed a stunning campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024 with two medals. Manu opened India’s tally at the Games with a bronze medal in women’s 10m air pistol event, ending the country’s 12-year-long wait for a shooting medal at the Olympics. She also became the first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal.

But that was just the start as Manu combined with her partner Sarabjot Singh to bag another bronze medal in the mixed team 10m air pistol event a few days later. Manu and Sarabjot defeated South Korea in the bronze medal match to clinch India’s first-ever team medal in shooting at the Olympics. Her second bronze medal saw Manu become the first Indian woman to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics.

She also became the first athlete in Independent India to win two medals in the same edition of the Olympics. India’s first-ever Olympic medallist Norman Pritchard, was the first to achieve the extraordinary feat for India when he won two silver medals in the 1900 Olympics in Paris. Manu is only the third athlete post-independence to have won two Olympic medals for India.

Wrestler Sushil Kumar, who won a bronze at the Beijing Olympics and a silver medal at the London Olympics and P V Sindhu, who won a silver and a bronze at the Rio Olympics and Tokyo Olympics, respectively are the only other two athletes to have won multiple medals at the Games.
