New Delhi: UFC Bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili ended Umar Nurmagomedov’s unbeaten 18-fight streak at the Intuit Dome arena in Inglewood on January 19, Sunday. This was also the first successful title defense by Merab in the UFC. The fight commenced with both fighters being cautious and didn’t go for any strike in the first 40 seconds of the fight.
Umar started things with a High kick but fell short and in reply, Dvalishvili threw a leg kick to Umar. The champion caught Umar early in the round and attempted his first takedown of the fight.
In the end moments of the round one Umar hurt Merab with his right hook and closed the round in favor of him. Nurmagomedov continued the pressure on the champion in the second round as well.
Umar was attacking Merab’s body with his kicks but the champion was very successful in his takedown defenses. The second round has seen a high-level battle between both fighters.
From the third round, Merab changed the prospect of the bout as he was attempting many takedowns. Both fighters exchanged shots and Merab hit a clean right hook to Umar and he kept the high pace during the fight.
Umar was seen fatigued and at the same time, Dvalishvili was looking more confident heading into further rounds in the fight. Dvalishvili was putting pressure with his takedowns and won the last three rounds of the fight convincingly.
With this win over Nurmagomedov, the Georgia champion broke the unbeaten run of Umar in front of his coach Khabib Nurmagomedov, who finished his career without a loss. This was also the first career loss in the Nurmagomedov family in UFC history.
