Monsoon alert: Rainy Season Fuels Rise in Influenza A cases, expert shares tips for prevention

New Delhi: With the onset of the monsoon, cases of Influenza A takes a surge. In Mumbai, rainy season has led to a noticeable spike in flu activity in the city, with a major surge in flu cases in the city. The hospital is seeing a rise in outpatient visits for flu-like diseases and vector borne diseases like dengue and malaria, as per report of TOI.

Amid such concerns and onset of monsoons how to take care and note symptoms of Influenza A virus?

Dr Divya Gopal, Internal Medicine at Sir HN Reliance Hospital and Research Centre told News9, “Influenza A is a contagious viral infection which usually presents with symptoms like fever,cough,sore throat,runny/stuffy nose,muscle aches,tiredness,loss of appetite,at times nausea/vomiting and also loose stools.”

“Usually it is a self limiting disease where patients are symptomatic for 3-4 days,and improve with anti pyretics like paracetamol,antiviral medications and supportive therapy,” added Dr Gopal.

Patients with lowered immunity suffering from diabetes,heart disease,kidney disease,asthama are very prone to developing pneumonia which might need hospitalisation and close monitoring.
Complications are usually seen in small children and elderly population.

Ways to protect yourself

Regular hand washing, keeping surrounding clean,good nutritious diet are important measures to prevent the infection.

“Yearly influenza immunisation is important especially in people who have a lower immunity.
Early diagnosis and treatment is important,in case of symptoms please meet your physician so that you can be monitored and treated for complications,” said Dr Gopal.
