Musheer Khan to Akash Deep: Top performers from 1st round of Duleep Trophy 2024

New Delhi: Several India regulars were in action in the first round of the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2024 which concluded on Sunday, September 08 with India B and India C winning their respective matches. Ruturaj Gaikwad-led India C defeated Shreyas Iyer’s India D by 4 wickets in Anantpur while Shubman Gill-led India A faced a crushing defeat against Abhimanyu Easwaran’s India B by 76 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

While the big names failed to live up to the expectations, a number of young guns stole the show with their impressive performances for their respective teams. Musheer Khan was arguably the stand-out performer with the bat with a stunning knock of 181 runs for India B while Akash Deep was a consistent threat with the red ball for the opposition batters for his team India A.

Musheer Khan

Musheer Khan announced his arrival in Duleep Trophy in style with a sensational ton for India B in their clash against Shubman Gill-led India A at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Musheer slammed a brilliant knock of 181 runs to rescue his team after a top-order collapse and helped them post a strong total of 321 runs on the board in their first innings.

Musheer’s 181 was laced with 16 fours and 5 sixes as he showcased his talent and skills against the likes of Mukesh Kumar, Washington Sundar and Navdeep Saini among others. Despite failing to replicate his heroics in the 2nd innings, the 19-year-old finished as the top run-getter for his team with 181 runs.

Manav Suthar

Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar caught the eyes of many with his exceptional performance for Ruturaj Gaikwad-led India C in their clash against India D. Suthar ran riot with the ball during India D’s second innings to pick up a total of 7 wickets and finish with remarkable figures of 7/49 off his 19.1 overs.

He opened his account with the prized wicket of Devdutt Padikkal before dismissing the likes of Ricky Bhui, KS Bharat and Axar Patel to change the game in his favour and help his side register a thumping victory by 4 wickets. Suthar finished the match with a total of 8 wickets in two innings and is currently the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.

Axar Patel

Team India all-rounder Axar Patel played for Shreyas Iyer’s India D in the first round of the Duleep Trophy and was one of the senior players in the team who didn’t disappoint with his performances. Axar top-scored for his team in their first innings with a terrific knock of 86 runs and followed it up with two wickets during India C’s innings.

He then scored 28 runs in his side’s second innings before picking up one more wicket to finish the game with a total of 114 runs and 3 wickets. Axar will not feature in the upcoming matches in the Duleep Trophy as he will join the Indian team after being named in the 16-man squad for the Bangladesh Test series.

Akash Deep

Akash Deep made giant strides with his impressive display with the ball in the first round of the Duleep Trophy. The Bengal pacer was arguably the best bowler in the first round of the tournament as he consistently troubled the opposition batters with his pace and variations. Playing for India A, Akash Deep picked up a 4-wicket haul apiece in both innings against India B.

He finished as the highest wicket-taker after the first round of matches with 8 wickets to retain his spot in the Indian Test squad. The Bengal pacer has been named in India’s squad for the 1st Test against Bangladesh and will be hoping to continue his stellar run for the national team.

Navdeep Saini

Navdeep Saini also enjoyed a great outing for India B in the first round of Duleep Trophy 2024. The pacer was on top of his game during India A’s first innings as he cleaned up Shubman Gill with a brilliant delivery and finished with figures of 3/60. He followed it up with two more wickets during India A’s second innings.

Navdeep also made a substantial contribution with the bat for India B as he played a crucial knock of 56 runs in his side’s first innings to help them post 321 runs on the board and win the game comprehensively by 76 runs.
