Chennai: The sleuths from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out raids on Thursday at around 25 places in Tiruchy, Thanjavur, and Mayiladuthurai districts, including residences of two former functionaries of Popular Front of India (PFI), in connection with PMK cadre V Ramalingam’s murder in 2019.
“NIA officials are conducting intensive raids at 25 places across Tamil Nadu in connection with the murder case of PMK leader ‘Thiruvidaimarudur’ Ramalingam since this morning. While more than 10 people have been arrested so far in the Ramalingam murder case, the NIA is making efforts to arrest 6 more absconding accused in connection with the crime,” according to sources.
PMK leader Ramalingam hacked to death for his strong opposition to religious conversion
Ramalingam, former district secretary of PMK (Paatali Makkal Katchi) from Thanjavur District, was hacked to death on February 5, 2019. It is said that he was killed because of his strong opposition to religious conversion in the area.
Thiruvidaimarudur police of Tanjore district registered a case in connection with the murder and arrested 5 people including Mohammad Riaz, Nizam Ali, Sarbuddin, Mohammad Rishwan, Azharuddin, and Kurinji Hill. Besides, police filed a FIR against 18 people in connection with this case. Later, the case was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and they registered a separate case and arrested a total of 12 people. It is said that 6 people are absconding in this case.
NIA conducted similar raids last year too
Earlier last year, NIA officials conducted similar raids at 9 places in the Tanjore district including Kumbakonam, Thirubhuvanam, Rajagiri, Athirampatnam, North Mangudi, and Thirumangalakkudi.
They also conducted raids in Tirunelveli, Tirupur, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, and other districts. The NIA officials who collected various details then are now conducting intensive raids to nab the absconding criminals.
