Night travel banned in Idukki as heavy rains pose threats of landslides, waterlogging

 

Idukki: As heavy downpour causes havoc across Idukki district, one of the main attractions for tourists, the district collector has issued an order prohibiting night travel ban. Further, a holiday has been declared for all educational institutions in the Devikulam Taluk of Idukki.

Travel has also been banned along the Gap-road on the Kochi – Dhanush Kodi national highway.

Idukki district collector Sheeba George in her Facebook post has said, “Night travel ban is strictly imposed in Idukki. Due to heavy rain, a night travel ban is strictly imposed in Idukki. The travel ban is effective from 7pm to 6am beginning today and will continue until further orders. As there are threats of landslides, water logging and tree felling, people are asked to remain cautious”.

The Collector quoted the IMD in its advisory and stated that heavy rainfall and gusty wind speed reaching 40 kmph is likely to occur at one or two places in Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and moderate rainfall will occur at these places.

Following heavy rain, the shutters of the headworks dam in Munnar was raised by 10cms. People living in the banks of Muthirappuzha river was asked exercise caution as water levels rising could pose a threat.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the state will continue to receive heavy rain till tomorrow. The northern districts are more likely to receive heavy rain. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Centre, the coasts of Kasaragod, Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram districts are likely to experience rough seas and high waves of height up to 3.4 meters.

The IMD has advised fishermen not to go fishing as there is a possibility of strong winds on the Kerala Lakshadweep coast till tomorrow and till the 29th on the Karnataka coast.

The weather forecast says that there is a possibility of heavy rain in 9 districts of the state in the coming hours.
