New Delhi: The legendary Sunil Gavaskar was left in tears as India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy’s father Mutyalu Reddy touched his feet in an emotional meeting on the sidelines of the ongoing 4th Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday. Gavaskar met with Nitish’s family after the young all-rounder smashed his maiden Test century for India on Day 3 of the Boxing Day Test.
It was a special day for the Reddy family in Melbourne as they witnessed Nitish become the first India no.8 to score a Test ton in Australia and the third youngest from the country to achieve the feat. Nitish slammed a brilliant knock of 114 runs to help India post 369 runs on the board, in reply to Australia’s first innings total of 474 runs at the MCG.
Nitish’s father and the other family members of the India all-rounder met Gavaskar at the MCG on Sunday. In a clip of the meeting that surfaced on social media, Nitish’s father Mutyalu Reddy can be seen touching the India legend’s feet, leaving him overwhelmed and emotional. Nitish’s mother and his sister too touched Gavaskar’s feet to take blessings.
An emotional Gavaskar thanked Mutyala for his sacrifices in making Nitish the cricketer that he is today and said it is because of his struggles that India have managed to unearth a ‘diamond’ in the 21-year-old all-rounder. “We know how much he has sacrificed. He has struggled a lot. Because of you, I am tearing up. Because of you, India has got a diamond, Indian cricket has got a diamond,” Gavaskar told Nitish’s father.
