New Delhi: Pakistan’s fielding horrors returned to haunt the hosts once again during their second Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on Day 1 on Saturday, August 31. Saud Shakeel dropped a sitter during Bangladesh’s first innings, leaving his teammates and the umpire stunned. It was a regulation catch for Shakeel, who was standing at 5th slip. However, he ended up making a mess of it.
The incident happened on the very first ball of Bangladesh’s first innings when Pakistan pacer Mir Hamza managed to induce an edge off the bat of visitors’ opener Shadman Islam. It was a brilliant delivery from Hamza which was angling into the batter and drifted away late to catch an edge off the left-hander’s bat.
The plan was perfectly executed by Hamza with as many as five slip fielders in place as the ball flew straight to Shakeel. However, Shakeel ended up dropping an easy catch, denying Pakistan a chance to strike early in the game. The fielders at 3rd and 4th slip also had a chance to grab the catch after the ball deflected off Shakeel’s hands.
However, Islam ended up surviving as Pakistan’s fielding disaster class left even umpire Richard Kettlebrough stunned. The on-field umpire was seen hiding his face with his hand as he couldn’t help but react to another comical fielding error from Pakistan. The video of Shakeel’s howler went viral on social media.

Pakistan bundled out for 274 runs
Talking about the game, Pakistan were bundled out for 274 runs in the first innings after spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz bagged a five-wicket haul for Bangladesh. Miraz spun a web around the Pakistan batting line-up as he ran through their top and lower middle order by dismissing the likes of opener Saiym Ayub, skipper Shan Masood, Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Ali among others.
Ayub top-scored for Pakistan with a 58-run knock while skipper Masood too notched up a half-century as he scored 57 off 69 balls. Agha Salman’s gritty 54 in the lower middle order helped Pakistan finish with a decent total on the board.
