New Delhi: Novak Djokovic defeated Germany’s Dominik Koepfer on Wednesday and reached in the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics 2024. He became the first player in the history of tennis to qualify for four Olympics quarterfinals.
Djokovic was not at his best against the German player and made some errors throughout the match but he capitalised on Koepfer’s weak backhand and won the contest 7-5, 6-3. The 14-time French Open winner got the better of Koepfer in an hour and 37 minutes.
The 37-year-old is making his fifth Olympic appearance and remains in the hunt for his first gold medal in singles. His best finish so far in the Olympics came in Beijing 2008, where he won the bronze medal after defeating USA’s James Blake in third place match.
He lost his bronze medal matches to Juan Martin del Porto in 2012 and Pablo Carreno Busta in 2021. He made a first-round exit in Olympics 2016 after losing against del Porto. After the match, Djokovic said that it is an honour to represent his country at the Olympics, which is an incredible sporting event.
“It is a great honour to represent my country at the Olympics. It is an incredible sporting event. We play Roland Garros every year in this stadium but the crowd, the atmosphere, the colours, everything is different. In a good way. The Roland Garros crowd is very knowledgeable and passionate about tennis but the Olympic crowd is something different” Djokovic said after the win.
Djokovic to square off against Tsitsipas in quarterfinals
Djokovic will face Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the men’s singles quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics 2024. Both players have played against each other 13 times, including the finals of the 2023 Australian Open and 2021 French Open. The Serbian leads the head-to-head against Tsitsipas 11-2.
