Paris Olympics 2024: Brazil’s Marta Vieira is still barred from playing Spain in the semifinals

New Delhi: Brazil had appealed the two-match ban to CAS, in order to shorten the suspension of their veteran forward Marta Vieira to just one game and obtain entry into Tuesday night’s semifinal matchup against the Spanish. The Paris Olympics women’s football team’s semifinal matchup between Brazil and Spain will not feature the seasoned player Marta, since the Court of Arbitration for Sport has affirmed her two-match suspension.

The 38-year-old, who now holds the record for most goals scored in her nation and is set to retire from international football this year, was shown a straight red card on July 31 during their team’s group defeat to Spain for a risky challenge late in the first half. She was issued a red card for a challenge on Olga Carmona of Spain during first-half stoppage time, and she sobbed as she left the field in Bordeaux.

Marta was competing in her sixth Olympics as the six-time women’s global player of the year. This big competition will be the 38-year-old star’s final appearance with the national women’s football squad. Brazil were competing in France for a place in the quarterfinals.

Marta has never led Brazil to an Olympic or Women’s World Cup victory, despite all of her achievements. In 2004 and 2008, the team came very close to earning two silver medals. Marta Vieira da Silva, better known by her first name alone, has made 200 appearances for Brazil in the international game and scored a record 119 goals. She has competed in six Olympics as well as six women’s World Cups. With seventeen goals in the World Cup, she holds the record. She is one goal away from tying teammate Brazilian Cristiane’s record with 13 Olympic goals.
