New Delhi: Paris is set to host its first-ever Paralympics which will begin with a glittering opening ceremony on August 28. Like the recently-concluded Olympics, the Paralympics will too kickstart with rock and roll and set the stage for one of the biggest sporting extravaganzas. India has send its largest contingent of 84 athletes to compete in Paris.
The Indian contingent is hopeful of bringing laurels to the country by surpassing the previous medal tally of 19 achieved at the Tokyo Paralympics. The Indian women participants from the last edition of the Paralympics has also increased from 14 to 32.
Out of the 22 Paralympic sports, India is participating 12 with debut in para cycling, para judo and para rowing.
Opening ceremony to start with grand parade
The Paris Paralympics opening ceremony will begin at 11.30 PM IST with a grand parade on the iconic Champs-Elysees. The parade will feature up to 184 delegations from around the globe, including 6000 athletes and other officials. After this, the ticket holders will have the opportunity to witness the official parade at Place de la Concorde which will have artistic segments.
Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman enlisted to transform the Paralympic ceremony. Ekman’s performance will centre around dance, featuring over 150 dancers, including those with disabilities and will be viewed by more than 65000 spectators.
